Hikoi and Korero

The walk and talk was incredibly helpful !! Being able to talk about my practice and talk through the ideas and keep talking until I figured it out was fun! Through talking to Marijka I remembered that my grandfather was a cartographer in the war and that my grandfather painted the birds that came to his garden, and my mother’s almost religious scrapbooking when I was younger, and I realised the pattern of my family’s documentation in different creative ways, and realised that my art practice sits right at the end of that line.

This was an incredibly important piece of context for me, as I no longer feel as though I’m an isolated event in my family history that I have been so detached from my whole life, but now I am an artist working off the back of four generations worth of documentation and creative work.

Above are the beautiful notes that Marijka took from out korero 🙂
