Ethos/ RD Notes

My work doesn’t need ethics approval because I make paintings that no one cares about therefore there are no stakeholders.

What does it mean, how does it matter, and who is affected by the research?

keep it 1000-1500 words

What do you hope to discover or communicate through your practice, and how does this draw others into a web of relations?

I hope to capture in my work the liminal, echoing, timelessness of an empty bus station at night when you’ve missed the bus. I want to bottle up the mellow waiting, the anxious waiting, the anticipation of something, and the commonly felt emotions, or lack of, that comes with people’s interactions with transport in the city and use it as the paint that I soak my works in. I draw mostly from my own experiences of my commute. I try to capture the emotions of conversations I’ve had. – the ethics of patience – otherwise than being book !!

What kinds of power relations come into play in the process of art making and the event of exhibiting your work? What responsibilities do you have?

I like to make larger paintings, that like Rothko’s consume you when you look at them, I want to surround the viewer and immerse them in the feeling of these paintings. I like to exhibit them in large spaces though, where viewers have autonomy over how close to the paintings they can stand, so if they get too overwhelming they can step away.

What do you think will be revealed or understood through the undertaking of this research project?

A better understanding of affective modes of visual communication, and how to capture niche and specific emotions so they can be reproduced like a candle.
