I would like to preface this post by quickly providing some context for my headspace when I was in this chat. The day before my younger sister Amy had put herself in hospital and I had rushed home to go see her where she was admitted to a 24 hour care facility that she was supposed to be in for four days. About an hour before my chat with Jeena my dad had called me to say that Amy had checked herself out and was at home now but that I didn’t need to rush home because both he and mum were there to keep her company. So the room was spinning and my brain was a whirlwind but here is what I retained from my otherwise really helpful chat:
- We first talked about the shift back from printmaking to painting, and how it much better suits my mode of working, provides me with more immediacy, and overall gives me more freedom to communicate the uniqueness of each individual journey.
- We talked about how “the commute” is not one whole thing – how each bus that i catch has a different energy. (a blog post about the specifics of that will be coming) the 814 has a very very different energy to the NX2, and by lumping them together i am watering down and being dishonest to my experience.
- we talked about the language of painting, and how liquid paint has a certain flow, and gesture holds movement, all of which are good tools to utilise and be aware of – by turning the dried under layer upside down i am disrupting the flow – do i want to do that? did i mean to do that?
- Jeena suggested I uptake some kind of daily practice, whether its painting or making the deep fries to communicate (to both others and myself) the complexity and difference in every day.
- she mentioned the concept of personal vs public sensory experiences and hallucinations. She mentioned Olivier Sac (?)’s “the man who mistook his wife for a hat” i cant remember why but i am still very interested.
- We talked about Rachel Rossin again (Brilliant) ((That wasn’t sarcastic i do really love her))
- She also told me to go read “Non-Places” by Marc Auge ! this sounds like it could be a seminal text for me later
Here are the words i wrote down and now cant remember the exact context for but i like them:
- energy
- time / motion
- time, energy, lived experience.
- spacially
- cognitive/sensory
- flow
- unknowing
- accumulative
- gestural abstraction
That is all. Thank you π
