these are my notes from my 1:1 with Fiona
- not all bus stations are non places – be careful about generalising too much – make sure the focus of a non place is that you are physically there and mentally elsewhere. find your own definition for Non-Place and preferably your own term – nothing is too obvious.
- state that your commute is part of your practice.
- write down the thing about lyrics and music ! it is one of your aims !
- we talked about smooth and striated space, and Fiona said “staying present to the smooth” is one of my methodologies. one of my active methodologies is “Resisting Non-Place”
- new words : commute conscious, commute awakening, being “commute conscious” is not a light switch, it is something you have to actively practice, or else you will slip into non place again.
- HOW DO ALL THOSE METHODS CONTRIBUTE TO PAINTING
- what goggles do i wear? what am i looking for in situations, what rose tint am i seeing everything through? those are my aims.
- my note taking and bus photographs are my methods, and my methodology is staying present and alert and commute conscious.
- “the commute is a system designed to turn you off” so you have to work hard to stay present.
- you got this – don’t get too overwhelmed.
