Amy showed me Jonathan Lasker’s work and needless to say i really really like it but it made me realise that I’ve done all this research for studio and my essays and my research currently lives in my open tabs and that I should probably make an actual post about the artists I’m looking at instead of making a slideshow of them so i have a quick reference while I’m painting.
Thus; Becks and the Big Wigs™ is born. below are the artists who’s work I’ve been particularly interested in and have been looking at over the course of the semester.
firstly, Jonathan Lasker.
I really like that he posts his sketches and studies on his website alongside his work – its really annoying that i found out how aligned our processes are AFTER the RD methodologies assignment. been looking at his work for a while but never went digging around his website like an idiot.
Jason Stopa
big boi fan of his colour work and compositions. I keep referring back to his work and process of repeating a system and a mode of working without being repetitive and still keeping each work interesting.
Yayoi Kusama, obviously.
My heart and soul, my queen, my patron saint, my first love. I will never stop finding new parts of her enormous lifelong collection of paintings to obsess over. Her colour and pattern work has been my favourite thing ever since I was like 16 and to deny her influence on my work is a disservice to it. particularly at the moment i am in love with her bright painting – I love the compositions and colour and scale of them (they’re pretty big) She’s one of those artists that I keep finding at the right times in my practice and new elements of her work will pop up when I need them.
Peter Halley
again, colour choices and graphicness are why i like Halley’s work – he’s also on here because Jeena told me to look him up and then instead of looking into his work i just had the google images page of his work open in my tabs for the last three weeks – so he has been an influence.
Simone Albers
“i just think they’re neat”- Marg Simpson
Catherine Haggarty !
i really love these works because they incorporate the oil pastels too and i love the way she uses frames. her work have an ethereal energy about them that i hope to capture somewhere in my work
these are all the main homies in my intellectual painterly neighbourhood that i can think of rn but ill update you if i remember any more
